Wrapping up Multiplication!

This week we wrapped up our unit on multiplication.  Students took their unit 3 test on Tuesday.  I have to say that I am very impressed with the student's effort and thinking on this test.  I wanted to review some of the strategies that your child learned to help them multiply.  Below you will find anchor charts that we created as a class for the multiplication strategies.  I hope that you find these helpful when you assist your child with extra practice.  Students were encouraged to choose the strategy that they were most comfortable with when multiplying.  I would suggest asking your child which strategy they were most comfortable with and giving them a few practice problems to observe them using that strategy.

Area model for multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit
Distributive Property
Partial Products
Combination of all strategies
Regrouping
Students also learned different strategies for Multi-Step Multiplication Problems.  Below you will find the strategy anchor chart that we created as a class. You will also see an example of a multi-step problem that students solved in class, as well as student work samples.  What awesome mathematicians I have!!!!

Students will be applying their multiplication strategies to our upcoming unit in division!

Marshmallow flyers!!

Students have been learning about force and motion these past 2 weeks during science! They used their knowledge to construct marshmallow flyers with their partner. On Monday, we will have our class challenge to see which team designed the flyer that makes the marshmallow go the farthest. Then we will compare amongst our grade level. The winning team from the grade level will get to compete in the Science
Olympics at MOSI! Here are some pictures of their marshmallow flyers!
